How to Convert Square Feet to Tons of Asphalt

Converting square feet to tons of asphalt is the most common calculation needed when planning a paving project. Most people know the dimensions of their driveway, parking lot, or road in square feet, but asphalt is sold and delivered by the ton. Our square feet to tons calculator bridges this gap by applying the standard asphalt density and your chosen thickness to determine the exact tonnage required.

The conversion depends on two key variables that you must know: the total area in square feet and the desired compacted thickness in inches. If you only know the length and width, simply multiply them together to get the area in square feet. For irregular or circular areas, you can break the shape into rectangles or use the appropriate geometric formula to calculate the area.

Square Feet to Tons Conversion Formula

Conversion Formula

Tons = (Sq Ft × Thickness/12 × 145) ÷ 2000

Simplified: Tons = Sq Ft × Thickness(in) × 0.00604

Quick Example Calculations

500 sq ft at 3 inches: 500 × 0.25 × 145 / 2000 = 9.1 tons

1,000 sq ft at 3 inches: 1,000 × 0.25 × 145 / 2000 = 18.1 tons

2,000 sq ft at 4 inches: 2,000 × 0.333 × 145 / 2000 = 48.3 tons

5,000 sq ft at 4 inches: 5,000 × 0.333 × 145 / 2000 = 120.8 tons

Square Feet to Tons Conversion Table

This comprehensive conversion table shows the tons of asphalt needed for any combination of area and thickness. To use it, find your project area in the left column and read across to the column matching your desired thickness. All values assume standard hot mix asphalt with a density of 145 pounds per cubic foot. Add 5-10% to your final number for waste and compaction variance.

Reverse: How Many Square Feet Does 1 Ton Cover?

Sometimes you know how much asphalt you have available in tons and need to determine how much area it will cover. This reverse calculation is equally important for budgeting and project planning. The coverage per ton varies dramatically based on the thickness of application. One ton of asphalt applied at 2 inches thick covers roughly twice as much area as the same ton applied at 4 inches thick, because the thickness directly determines the volume of material being spread.

How to Calculate Your Area in Square Feet

Before you can convert to tons, you need an accurate measurement of your paving area in square feet. Different shaped areas require different formulas. Here are the most common shapes and the formulas to calculate their areas. For complex or irregular shapes, break the area into smaller rectangles and triangles, calculate each separately, and add them together for the total.

Rectangle / Square

Length × Width

Example: 20 ft × 40 ft = 800 sq ft

The most common driveway and parking lot shape. Simply measure length and width in feet and multiply.

Circle

π × r² (3.14159 × radius²)

Example: r=30 ft: 3.14159 × 900 = 2,827 sq ft

For circular driveways. Measure the radius (half the diameter) from the center to the edge.

Triangle

(Base × Height) / 2

Example: B=40 ft, H=30 ft: 40×30/2 = 600 sq ft

Measure the base length and the perpendicular height from base to the opposite vertex.

Trapezoid

((Base1 + Base2) × Height) / 2

Example: B1=30, B2=50, H=40: (80×40)/2 = 1,600 sq ft

For areas wider at one end. Measure both parallel sides and the perpendicular distance between them.
